Rankins on the Mall Newsagency opened for business on the 15 Sep 1982 to coincide with the opening of the queen street mall (between Edward and Albert streets) and the beginning of the 1982 commonwealth games. We stayed situated there for 5 years until the mall was extended from Albert to George Street in 1988/9.
With the 1989 Mall extension we relocated west of our original position (approx 20 meters) to a new shop which brought 7 day trade and extended hours due to the 1988 expo celebrations. Then in 1991 we extended the business to keep up with the influx of people into the queen street mall.
In 1999, when the entire Queen Street mall was refurbished to its current appearance we moved the business for a third time to its present position: outside hungry jacks. We now trade 7 days a week and are open Sunday to Thursday; 6am until midnight and Friday and Saturday; 6am until 2am.
The original owner has been here for 25 years. It is one of the few successful family operated businesses on the queen street mall. We specialise in all forms of transport tickets (
Single, Daily, Off-peak Daily, Weekly, Monthly and the Go Card), International and local phone cards, Starter Kits for mobiles phones, Phone credit for mobile phones and other newsagency products; Lottery Tickets, Instant Scratch Its, etc. We serve a wide variety of international tourists and students. The goals of our staff members is to always be kind, helpful and courteous and to serve with speed and accuracy.
